DDC President voices support for recommendations of NYC diamond and jewelry industry impact study
Moshe Mosbacher, President of the Diamond Dealers Club, has voiced his support for the implementation of the recommendations made in a major New York Diamond and Jewelry Industry Impact Study, which was released yesterday. The study, which is the first in-depth project of its type to have been conducted in the past 20 years, was prepared by the Pratt Center for Community Development on behalf of the 47th Street Business Improvement District (BID), in collaboration with the Empire State Development Corporation.
"This is both an impressive and important document and I congratulate the 47th Street BID, its board of directors and the study's authors for a job well done," Mr. Mosbacher said. "They have confirmed empirically what we have long known instinctively, and that is that the diamond and jewelry industries play an absolutely critical role in the economic life of the city and the state, and that decisive action is required to secure their long-term future."
"As the report well illustrates, the continuing health of the New York Diamond District is in all of our interests. For not only is it the nerve center of New York's largest export generating industry, but to no small degree the fortunes of the diamond and jewelry business in the entire United States rest upon the critical mass of professionals working on 47th Street. It is consequently essential that the recommendations of the study be heeded," Mr. Mosbacher said.
"The Diamond Dealers Club is most proud of the role it played in the establishment of the Diamond District on 47th Street, which largely developed following the decision by the DDC in the 1940s to move its headquarters here from lower Manhattan. And, today, with our close to 2,000 members, we still consider our Club to be the anchor of the diamond trade in New York City. As the report points out, the DDC is currently in the midst of a massive membership drive, which not only will serve to strengthen our organization, but also the position of the American diamond sector and business community on 47th Street," Mr. Mosbacher said.
